This just in from my company's admin:

In honor of Earth Day 2008, (tomorrow, 22 April), Ktech is going to make a contribution to the environment, by declaring tomorrow “Bring Your Own Coffee Cup Day” We will be collecting all styrofoam cups from all three buildings at the end of the day today, in an effort to prevent a full day’s worth of Ktech’s pollution being dumped into our land fills.

Please bring your own cup from home tomorrow, if you’d like to have coffee, tea, water, etc. We will re-distribute the styrofoam cups at the end of the day tomorrow. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation. For more information on Earth Day 2008, or to find other ways to contribute, please visit the Earth Day 2008 website at http://ww2.earthday.net/

That's right, folks: ONE DAY of reusable mugs. Then you get the styrofoam cups back.

I'm going to mow my yard tomorrow

 It's the thought that counts. Maybe.

My contribution will be to not go to the gym so that I do not breathe so hard and minimize the amount of CO2 I personally put into the environment.

I guess if people actually bring a mug in for that one day, they are likely to leave it at the office so are less likely to use styrofoam cups from then on.

So it's not totally lame.

That's my hope. But I'm considering just swiping all the styrofoam cups and giving them to Goodwill.

I had a surprise opportunity to vent about this to the president of the company at my anniversary luncheon this week. I mocked. . .I pointed out that our customers switched to mugs for everyone years ago. . .and a couple of others joined in. The guy is a total prick (and Lips, your dad was actually making fun of earth day), but a cheapskate. I could see that the idea of saving money on cups appealed to him.

One day is lame, a week would be better, a month would be even better.

How come you guys can't also have paper cups instead, that at least... bio degrade? (As well as using your own mug).

Also was there an earth hour in the US last month? There was one in Oz, 8pm, where everyone turned off their lights. Or were supposed to anyway.

Aren't styrofoam cups easier to recylce though? At least compared to waxed paper.

Not only do I have a mug at a tumbler at work, I save water by almost never washing them.

I thought that you couldn't recycle styrofoam at all?

That's always been my understanding. I'm not even sure why they're still being manufactured.

I'm fairly sure it's because they're cheaper to make than paper cups.

That, and for every styrofoam cup we produce, god strangles a puppy.

And we hate puppies.
