$2400 to replace my transmission. :(
Time to call up the scrapyard. $2400 for a tranny better come complete with a blowjob and a pair of falsies to keep as a memento.

It's times like these I stop regretting my decision to buy a new car.
Bummer.

That'd make a fine down payment on a new car.

Dude... Its time to let that car go!
Put the 2400.00 down on a new car instead of throwing it into the old one.

It depends on the car. If it's something worth saving then $2400 isn't that large of an investment. So why is the car so important to you Prorpger?

Car trouble, ugh. The heating coil, I believe it's called, just went on my car. I was losing fluid pretty bad. I don't know how much that's gonna cost me but I'm tempted to get a new car. Unfortunately, I'm not sure we can afford the payments on a newer car.

car trouble is never a good thing. what type of car is it that needs repair. I agree that sometimes it is better to get a new car than repair the old one.

You also take a big risk replacing the transmission. From what I have heard and seen my friends go through, replacing a transmission rarely goes well and works well.

my car is paid off in two months. throughout the last 6 mos of an extened pay period, it has had its ignition rebuilt, 2 new tires, a ?suspension bar, two spring thingys, and the rear breaks replaced. it is a very nice car and i love it--will keep it forever--but how do the damn things KNOW when they are almost paid off? i have a friend who has a body shop or id have had to put a second mortgage onmy cats.
Crap wears out, I was driving my Moms 10 y/o Lumina and the Alternator blew up. Save a pussy, hug a mechanic !

Its cheaper than a new car note year over year but it depends on if you expect to not have to fix more stuff.
Tough call.
Least its bonus season.

Bonus season is saving me. Really I don't have time to just run out and buy a new car right now. I'd have to figure out something to do with the old one and that means a tow truck. And Limper is is right, it's cheaper in the long run. There isn't anything wrong with besides a burnt out tail light. I figure that in about a year or so my wife will want a different car and I can give her mine and I can go out and get myself a new one. I'll also be able to take the time to research the kind of car I would want and what price range I can afford instead of just running out can picking up the 1st car that falls into view becauseI need a running car now.

This is when it would be the prefect time to do a five year cost analysis on the vehicle in question.
Just figure out yearly maintenance on the old bucket, gas mileage, miles per year, and Blue book resale value each year forward.
Then figure out the cost of leasing or buying a new car, maintenance costs, gas mileage, miles per year, and down payment.
Using an average interest rate, adjust all the costs to the here and now "present worth". Then compare.
Easy as algebra. :D

Thanks, I'm bleeding now.
When I need a new work truck I go to a dealer I know, good vehicles that have been mechanically checked as sound. Warren's philosphy is that if the vehicle runs good and keeps running good you'll tell others hence more buiness and you'll return to him yourself.

Well, I suppose it's superfluous now that (I assume) you've plunked down the 2400 bucks.
But really, once you know how to do it, is shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to punch in all the numbers. Plus whatever research time it takes.
