I'm kind of ambivalent about it, myself.
The ability of characters to pop back and forth between Earth and Mongo via wormhole kinda punches the classic premise (Earth people on exotic alien planet with no way home) right in the gut. I'm not so keen on an Aryan "Ming", either. I know that the Yellow Peril version of the old boy wouldn't fly today, but c'mon. And Dale engaged top some goober cop? Nigga please.
I'll prolly give it a few more eps to see where they go with it.

Pretty much agree with you on all points. I like the concept of Flash Gordon, so I'll watch a couple more.

Did not like. Ming was horrible (and not in a good way). The acting was wooden at best and bad porno acting at worst (the really bad part was bad porno acting with no nekkidness  ). The portals thing was "bleh" as was the whole father/macguffin angle. There's so much that can be done with the whole concept (from the bits with Ming playing the Princes/Barons off of each other and the politics involved to the fish out of water bits for the stars) and they seemed to go with "Stargate with Sporty guy, Reporter Girl and Shaggy the scientist.
Did not like.

I'll give it a few more episodes before making a final decision, but personally I like it. It is not as good as the animated version, but it is leaps and bounds better than the movie, and slightly better than the original series.

Heretic!
There were only two good things about the movie: The Guy that played Ming and the soundtrack, the rest was pure undiluted crap. That said, I enjoyed it and still do. :D

How can you ignore the awesomeness that was Brian Blessed as Vultan?

I need to watch a few more episodes to really decide if it is decent or not. It did provide some laughs for me because it brought back memories of that classic '70s porn version "Flesh Gordon"

We DVRed it and watched an hour of it tonight before we turned it off. Man did it suck. It was slooooow and the acting/writing was really bad. I stopped it from recording any more eps.

I heard it was shit so I avoided it. I was watching a Firefly marathon this week and Sci-fi was promoting the hell out of it.

BAFTA (the British equivalent), but yeah. The Oscar was won by Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do) by Burt Bacharach et al., and Flash wasn't even nominated. Bastards.
Even Flesh Gordan is better then this dreg

There are some concepts that can be done over and over again, and never fail to entertain if the creative team sticks to the basics and 'gets' the heart of the story. Flash Gordon is one of those. It sounds like it's been buggered again, and that's a damned shame.

As cheesy as the 80's version was, it definitely captured the comic strip roots of the character. A slightly less campy version would probably be dead on, but I did like where they were going with the Sam Jones version. The crazy thing was they had awesome casting for everyone except Flash and Dale Arden.
Whoever cast Max Von Sydow as Ming earned his paycheck that day. Throw in Brian Blessed, Topol, Timothy Dalton, and Peter Wyngarde, and that's just an great cast!
It's a rare remake that's as good or better then the original (BSG is one that's better), the shelved the remake of Casablanca as far as I can tell. What happened to the 2nd and 3rd movies of the Kong series ?

Totally agree with you on this one, man. And just think, with today's special effects! Heart-breaking.

I disagree on BSG being better. As for Dragon Boys claim on the 1980's Flash, dude you have officially proven you have absolutely no taste what so ever.
