HAYDEN, Idaho

A man who believed he bore the "mark of the beast" used a circular saw to cut off one hand, then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said.

The man, in his mid-20s, was calm when Kootenai County sheriff's deputies arrived Saturday in this northern Idaho town. He was in protective custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center.

"It had been somewhat cooked by the time the deputy arrived," sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said. "He put a tourniquet on his arm before, so he didn't bleed to death. That kind of mental illness is just sad."

It was not immediately clear whether the man has a history of mental illness. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Johnson would not say whether an attempt was made to reattach the hand, citing patient confidentiality.

The Book of Revelation in the New Testament contains a passage in which an angel is quoted as saying: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink the wine of God's fury."

The book of Matthew also contains the passage: "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

Wolfinger said he didn't know which hand was amputated.

I'm pretty sure everyone here agrees that following the bible word for word is a stupid idea at best, a criminally dangerous one at worst.

Insanity and Religion are a bad combination.

Damnit! Doesn't he know that his hand would have eventually given him EVIL SUPER POWERS? Moron.

Pff.

Ash Williams used a chainsaw, and he didn't have no stinkin microwave to cook the hand with either, he battled that bastard to the bitter end.

The enter exercise was pointless, he'll just learn to masturbate with his left and then how will he cut that one off?

He shouldn't have used a microwave. Hands are full of little bones, so they're much better in a stew, that way the bones will partly melt and they'll be easier to remove.

American cuisine really could improve a lot.

At least he didn't cut of someone else's hand.

But until he learns, that hook replacement hand is going to surprise him unpleasantly from time to time.

I wonder if he called 911 to report that his hand was evil, or to get medical attention for himself?

Probably because he realized that he needed some help. Folks with serious mental illness usually aren't totally irrational. Their rationality is just often colored by some irrational beliefs that lead them to do things that are perfectly logical to them even if they appear crazy to us.

Insanity and Religion are a bad combination.

I just want to state for the record that religion has nothing to do with this. Crazy folks and religion are no more a bad combination than crazy folks and leprechaun laser ax technology.

Crazy be crazy and whatever fucked up shit they get into they're going to get into. Sanitizing the world to prevent crazy folks from taking anything to an extreme would eliminate a lot of things. Violent video games would probably top the list.

Other things on the list:
Fashion models and entire fashion industry (can't let the anorexics see that shit)
Books that deal with fantasy and/or violence
RPGs (All RPGs unless it's a my little pony MMO... No scratch that. Someone might kill the ponies to have sex with them (http://www.kaytastrophe.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2188))
Much of Art
All fad diets (must approve all diets through the FDA for crazy person certifications)
Hate Groups (Free speech is out the window because some folks don't have the capacity to judge right from wrong)
Any conspiracy theory crap (Because where there's a conspiracy there's folks trying to do something bad and the crazy guy might try to save the world by taking some key figures out.)

And Varaj, WTF? What does this have to do with religion?

Insanity doesn't mix well with anything.

The same thing the horse story has to do with human sexuality. :)

From the original post:

... "mark of the beast" ... The Book of Revelation ... the New Testament ... the wine of God's fury... book of Matthew ... body to go into hell."

Could have fooled me.

Yeah, I know.

This particular case happens to be a crazy dude taking a literal approach to the bible. Which I'm saying only some insane people do. Other insane people have other ways to live their crazyness.

Man, that sure stroke a nerve in you, didn't it?

I've never been much interested in religion, except in so far as their mythologies can be amusing; but leprechaun laser axe technology would probably catch my fancy. Do you know where I can find this?

Indeed. Delusional people often behave perfectly rationally, once you accept their delusional premises.

Actually, it was the journalist who included the religious tidbits and tried to make a religious connection. Nothing is known of his mental health history, they don't even know which hand was cut off. The biblical references were totally unrelated to the story.

And some fucking morons couldn't apply a critical enough eye to realize the journalist was talking out their ass making presumptions that may or may not turn out to be right.

Well if that's the case, guilty as charged.

Yeah, I'm getting that vibe off the boards lately, but I don't take it seriously, you know, given that it's coming from a messageboard and all (gotta stick to my online personae...).
