You get lovely things like this:

DOCUMENT OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR THE PASTORAL CARE OF MIGRANTS AND ITINERANT PEOPLE: "GUIDELINES FOR THE PASTORAL CARE OF THE ROAD" (http://212.77.1.245/news_services/bulletin/news/20451.php?index=20451)

19. Those who know Jesus Christ are careful on the roads. They don’t only think about themselves, and are not always worried about getting to their destination in a great hurry. They see the people who “accompany” them on the road, each of whom has their own life, their own desire to reach a destination and their own problems. They see everyone as brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of God. This is the attitude that characterises a Christian driver.

Well if it makes a few devout drivers 'turn the other fender', is that such a bad thing? :)

Was actually thinking about something similar when I came back from Dubai. For a country where as a muslim you're supposed to be generous and kind I have never seen so many homicidal wankers driving around

A headlight for a headlight, a fender for a fender, I always say.

The old testament driver's handbook really did have a more pragmatic take on things.

I realize it's probably blasphemous or something because dogs are insult to Islam (and what isn't, nowadays?), but:

Say what??? Since when were dogs an insult to Islam:confused:

Anyway, what I also found amusing was that you could swear, tailgate and cutoff people on the roads in Dubai, but you were absolutely not allowed to perform rude gestures at anyway. Go figure ;)

Since Islamists have started playing the "I'm offended! Revenge! Kill the infidels!" game for the most ludicrous pretexts, the teddy bears being the latest example.

Aren't dogs unclean animals whose company should be avoided by Muslims? So, isn't likening people (specifically, Dubai's drivers) to anthropomorphic dogs (like Goofy) worthy of a thousand death threats?

Fortunately for me, Atticus is a bigger target.

Helga, are you a reactionary?

What do you mean by that and what makes you think this would be the case?

Oh I don't know, I'm probably just blowing smoke out of my ass, it just seems like you at times jump in to things with a tenacity and fervor that aren't really necessary.

I guess it probably came off as an insult, I'll go back to my hole.

Actually, isn't it always the same pretext - insulting Mohammed?

Quite right. Insulting Muslims is okay and usually won't cause riots. Insulting the prophet (SAW) and Islam is a problem.

So saying "Dubai drivers are all a bunch of ravening dogs who are unworthy of Allah's mercy" isn't a problem (or as much of one).

Saying "Dubai drivers drive in a fashion that would make the prophet (SAW) ashamed" isn't a problem.

Saying "Those Dubai drivers drive like Mohamed would while his 9 year old wife was giving him head" is probably a riot causing problem.

But Yanno, if you don't want trouble, you don't start screaming "I GOTTA BOMB IN MY BAG!!!" in US airports either.

Was she wearing a burka? If so I'm sure it is ok.

What I heard is that Muslims didn't think people should keep dogs - the money you spend feeding/caring for them should be given to charity instead. So it's not so much that dogs are filthy, but that dogs are a waste of resource better spent elsewhere.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

Yes I know these are horribly one sided and biased sources.

Volume 4, Book 54, Number 538:
Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volume 4, Book 54, Number 539:
Narrated Abu Talha:

The Prophet said, "Angels do not enter a house witch has either a dog or a picture in it."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volume 4, Book 54, Number 540:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:

Allah's Apostle ordered that the dogs should be killed.

As you can see the haddith vary, but we're generally warned against placing to much value in single line haddith like the first if we don't have the context it was issued in.

Also as far as I know the major issue muslims have about dogs is that their saliva is considered unclean so before we pray we need to perform wadu, so keeping a dog becomes a huge hassle and is avoided.

I have no problem with any faith saying dogs are icky. Their saliva is gross. :D
