View Full Version : Kay Tastrophe Secret Holiday Exchange

It's that time of year again, the holiday season. No matter what holiday you celebrate -- Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Yule, Annual Pick Yer Butt Day, whatever -- you can choose to participate in KT's Secret Holiday Exchange!

Cutoff date for signup is November 26th so I can get names drawn and PMs sent out. Participants should aim for a mid-December trip to the post office so recipients get their gifts by the end of the year.
____________________________

RULES:

Gifts must come to around $20 USD, I'd say no less than $15 but anything over $20 is up to you. Multiple small items on a wish list that come to $20, like two books and a figurine or something similar, that'd be ok, but if anybody decides to be a prankster and sends $20 worth of toilet paper rolls I will wield the Expulsionhammer in a swift and furious fashion, not that I think any of my cadets would pull something like that.

Shipping is an expense not figured into that $20 USD guideline, so for those who get a person abroad, it'd probably be smart to buy online and have it shipped locally.

You may or may not choose to reveal who you are when you send your gift. That won't be posted afterwards or anything. However, whether you know who sent you what or not, I'd make sure to post a nice acknowledgement of receipt and thank you once you get your fun stuff, so we can all be sure the gift got where it needed to.
____________________________

Questions? Want to sign up? Post it here, in this thread. Also, those who are participating, please start posting your wish lists/ideas here as well.

Here's to the spirit of comraderie and friendship amongst our cadets! :cheerssoldiers:

Why not? I was thinking of not doing this if it came up again this year, because for the most part, this has been a truly horrid year so far and does not promise to get better anytime soon. My mood has generally been quite lousy of late.

But it occurs to me that that may be precisely the best reason to be involved with the gift exchange again.

Count me in.

As always I am all about the quirky- fun, different and not bank busting.

I got lovely and wild socks last year from Coops and BA (thanks again!)

So socks, hair doodads, odd homegoods, whatever!

If it tickles your fancy, have at- it is the sentiment that means something to me not the gift itself.

Merganser

Well, my amazon wishlist is a confusing welter of storage items. I don't want to clean it up for use here, nor do I want to start a new one. So I's just gonna list things.

Book: All Shot Up, by Chester Himes
Book: The Big Gold Dream, by Chester Himes
CD: At the House of the Clerkenwell Kid, by The Real Tuesday Weld

oh Christ this isn't working. It appears that most of my literary wants are hideously expensive out-of-print crap like the complete diary (none of this abridged shit) of Samuel Pepys. It's ten volumes and probably costs a fortune. Oh well, whatever - I'm an easy going fellow, I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever someone gets me. I like the same sorts of things other people here enjoy, I think.

oh yeah, p.s.: Ancalagon - if you got me, please send Bianca Beauchamp. Let me know what day, though, so I can be at home to receive the crate. ;)
Don't forget the air holes.

Black Angel
12-03-2007, 04:53 AM
I'm pretty happy with whatever I'm given - similar to Brynja's thoughts, it's the sentiment, not the actual gift that counts!

As a general guideline I like reading (fantasy, sci fi, mystery, historical fiction), listening to music (got a cool CD from Harry Joy last year of local music from his area which rocked), Christmassy stuff in general, horses, gardening, alcohol, funky clothes/jewellery, things from your local area...

Hope that helps! Sorry we don't have any wishlist/amazon things here in Aus yet. :(

I don't have a wish list anywhere, as I really don't shop online anywhere but NKG, but my likes and dislikes should be fairly apparent. I like good music, mainly of the "No Depression" country/rock variety or progressive rock ala King Crimson. I read a LOT. Mainly what I consider to be hard science fiction - most fantasy gives me hives. I rarely watch movies at home anymore, preferring to go to the cinema, but when I do it tends to be Westerns, usually old school. You can't go wrong with RPGs, as long as it is, again, old school. I no longer buy 3.5 products.

Last year I eschewed putting a wish list out, as it's not something that makes me feel very good, and the person who gifted me did rather well regardless, but afterwards I decided that it was rude of me to make it so hard on the person trying to find me something. It was only because the person had a long memory that they were able to pick something that suited me.

I have wishlists at amazon and think geek searchable by the name you got for the address...

also ahve one at tombihn.com, but I know most of that stuff is a bit pricier, but I put it out here in case there are other bag whores in the area looking for a great company...

of course i"m always thrilled with home made things...

general tastes are urban fantasy and cyber punk
world of darkness books(I have most of the WOD books, and a decent number of vamp books)

also interested in setting books for savage worlds, and any obscure rule set that deals with one of my prefered genres
musically I"m a hiphop kid, but have an appreciation for classic rock and old country, and techno...

t shirts I"m an xl, unless they run small, and I try to avoid gamer black, just on principle

hope that helps:)

I like little doodads from Thinkgeek, or that sort of thing
Um, let's see.. I don't have any books on the history of France between the Carolingians and the Revolution. That might be nice. I think I mentioned some stuff by Chester Himes earlier in the thread. Oh, some stuff by Molière would be nice. Or Appian's The Civil Wars, or Cassius Dio's Reign of Augusuis.

I don't have a useful wishlist or anything. Really, I do have too many books, more than I'm likely to be able to read, but you know how it is.

I hope that's good. I can't really think of what else to say, heh.

There is always online liquor (http://cellarbrations.com.au/ ?) I am quite in favour of that. Anyone that can get me kummel or goldschlaeger can be my best friend. Or any booze that is equally as cool.

Hello

For me... I like sweet stuff, liqueur (again sweet, no cream or overly herbal/bitter), swords but that's *way* too expensive (although if you have a pile of money you were going to burn to make more room, the Albion Swords "Munich" with a scabbard would do nicely), latex but see above, books (at the moment, I'm looking at Gotrek and Felix Omnibus II, or Reaper's Gale, or White Night (from the Dresden files)), and movie wise perhaps Eastern Promices (ok it's only out in a few weeks but I can wait), american history X, the bourne ultimatum or the usual suspects.

I'm sure there is something in there that would be reasonably priced, and the list is long enough it's going to be a surprise. If however you want to come up with something more original, don't hesitate :)

Because I'm away from home I won't get my item until after new year's, so I hope no one hurried on my behalf.

I can't wait :)

Well I arrived home today to see a surprise package on the doorstep also, although apparently Australian Customs/Quarantine decided they liked surprise presents too, so sadly I have lost some garlic(...?) and I have to get a plant product(...?!) chemically treated before I can receive it. Sorry to my SS, I guess us Aussies should have said no plant related items... :(

On the bright side, I have a tasty looking jar of maple syrup, an awesome-looking piece of metal art and some funky rocks! :D

Thanks for the quirky gifts! It's now driving me crazy trying to work out who sent them! :D

Edit: From the state & the sig on the box, I'm guessing Squash Cop? Thanks man! They're some cool gifts.

HOLY....

I went looking for a "really big fucking smilie" image in Google, which was a mistake, but I wish I had one anyways.

Received my Secret Santa package today, and when I opened it, no lie, the words that came out of my mouth, speaking to the walls which I don't normally do, was "Holy fucking shit, holy fucking shit!" Made me all tingly.

Secret Santa, you did very well. Perfect present, and a book I've coveted for years - Denizens of Avadnu!

Many, many thanks. :D

Hey Anc!

I didn't know you were french-canadian! Souffle! Criossant! I speaka-your-languagea-nota-well! :)

So my package from you came on friday - Thanks for the +1 strength token, I am going to take it to work, cos there are some young new ruffians I need to intimidate into making me coffee.

I tried the booze, I don't know how you whacky canadians got lava into that stuff, but it's a good idea. I'm going to try a similar thing with koala's, I just need a license, a still, and a really sharp knife.

And a koala.

The snow - I'm sure it will come in handy, we're going through a heatwave, I heard snow was cold though? It's not as cold as I had expected.

I have to ask about the maple sugar though - do you eat it? Or do you use it as sugar? I've tried both so far, both seem to work.

Thanks!

Yeah, that was me. Two bulbs of home grown garlic, sorry you couldn't get them.

The Real Tuesday Weld came to my door mere moments ago and with them came the Clerkenwell Kid. It's been a while, but he has returned. I believe that I spoke the word 'ooo' in joyous anticipation and I've got a smirkish grin on my face.

Thanks aplenty to my very kind, my very generous and my very lovely Secret Santa. You are a delight and your spouse should give you a big hug from me.

I've received a note from the post office but I won't have time to go pick the package up (I hope it's the package) for a few days yet... very curious now :D

Yey - I got the rest of my pressie today (after being chemically treated by customs). Thanks Squashy for my gourd bowl - very appropriate - and the cool wooden beads & pinecone. I am sorry about the garlic - it would have been nice to try the homegrown good stuff. Obviously customs thought so too which is why they wanted it instead! ;)

Currently I have all my bits & pieces arranged on the windowsill so I can enjoy them each time I look out or pass by. :)

They owe you $5 American, you know, probably about twenty cents Australian...
