Hello
I just got home from a *fantastic* weekend in Montreal. I won't go in all the details, but something dawned on me. Basically, icebreakers can be horrid and still work quite well.
Case number one:
I'm at a fetish party and I see this girl dressed head to toe in latex looking intently at other people playing. This catches my attention and I decide that "screw being the wallflower, I'm going to try to talk to her" (it's extremely rare for me to approach people cold like that). So she's walking by and a little voice in my head is going "say *something* before she goes away". So I open my mouth, and something appallingly bad along the lines of "not a lot of people are wearing hoods here, how is it for you?". At this point, the little voice in my head went "oh my God that was lame". And yet... it did start a conversation and it lead to fun stuff.
Case number two:
I'm waiting in line for the bus to go back to Ottawa. This cute girl behind me looks at me and says "you know, I really need to get one of those suitcases with wheels". Despite this being painfully mundane, it did start a conversation, and now I have her phone number.
So...
Am I on to something, or was this just random luck going on?

That's pretty normal results. Icebreakers are just there to start the conversation and should be mundane observations without being too personal or detailed. That's all it takes, and women appreciate being treated like people instead of pickup objects.

It's probably come off better saying something 'mundane' like that, because it makes people feel more at ease to then have a longer conversation. Good work! :)

Even better when you ask them a question along the lines of "How is it for you?" because it gets them talking and shows an interest in them at the same time.

As long as you say something Ancalagon it's all good, even if you get the crap slapped out of you, as long as the cops aren't called. So did you plat it all swave and deboner or go for the semi-mad scientist (be yourself )?

Statistically, this is correct. (no blowjob was gotten btw). However, it's the odds that I had apparently misjudged.
(at this point neither girl has returned e-mail. Obviously step 1 is almost fully mastered, but step 2 is still appallingly bad)
99 times out of a 100 you'll get the crap slapped out of you if you ask a strange woman if she wants to fuck, but if you don't have to shell out $20 bucks that 1 is worth it.

That doesn't sound quite right. Are you including in the "5 in 10" the ones that call the cops and/or sue you?

Neither happen very often. I'm just going with the dozen or so studies I've read over the years on the subject.

I used to work with a guy that liked the "wanna fuck" line. He said that 9 times out of 10 he would get slapped. But that one was worth the minimal effort... and slapped face apparently...
The one "line" that I've used is straight forward. Just stated, "Hi, my name is James" and offered my hand. It worked a number of times. Even got me my first wife... notice that is in a past tense... so maybe it isn't a great line after all...
