The Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

Evidently I can't attach images correctly, you have to click on it to get it to turn at all.

I've been staring at that for about five minutes and I can't see it how it could be turning counter-clockwise. Am I that right-brained???

Snatch

I just see the right leg as being grossly shorter than the left. Ohhh...I have to click the image...

I don't see how it can be anything other than clockwise.

Ditto. That, plus the shadow of the outstretched foot is clearly travelling leftward in the photo and given its placement below the shadow of the back foot which is rooted very near its shadow, there's no physical possibility the rotation could be counterclockwise in direction and result in that movement.

Wait, did I just prove I'm left-brained?

Same here. Clockwise, and I can't see how it could be otherwise.

I see it as counter-clockwise and I cant get it to go any other way.

I saw it as counter-clockwise initially, but after thinking about it, then looking away & looking back again, I can see it as clockwise. So I guess maybe I'm ambi-brained?

Dr_Avalanche

Clockwise, for sure.

Saw it as counter-clockwise first, then I read the thread and it switched on the second viewing. Now I can't get it to go back to counter-clockwise.

Ancalagon

This is retarded.

Clockwise or counter clockwise is for rotational movement seen from the "top" -ie, the axis of rotation is pointing towards the viewer. We are seeing the rotation from the *side* ie is she was a planet, we would be looking at it from above the equator, not above the pole. Unless you specify the point of reference (top or bottom, ie south or north pole), the question makes no sense.

I see her dancing "to her right", meaning she is making her right side go forward, and pivoting on her left leg.

I can make it go either way.

That's wierd. In the image in the original/linked article, I see her going clockwise and in no way, shape, or form can I alter that.

In the image you posted, I see her going anti-clockwise. With great effort, I can switch her to clockwise.

What does that mean?

Seriously? WTF, how can it be any other way?

huh?

It's a rotation seen from the side, not the axis, how can it be clockwise OR anti-clockwise?!?!?

help me here people.

Brynja

Ok i was primarily counter-clockwise now I can get it to alter on command. I am bi-brained.

Ok I just had half the office over here watching the screen.

We're all aspergerish engineers so the conensus is that it's clockwise.

Except for the few freaks who saw it going the other way, and they have been excommunicated.

I'm assuming we're talking about the direction of the circle her extended foot is drawing. So basically if she was to look down, then it's clockwise for me.

But she's still turning to her right. Right = Clockwise.

Initially she looked like she was spinning clockwise, but if I focus down at the shadow of her foot I can get her to switch back and forth in accordance with my evil will.

But she's still turning to her right. Right = Clockwise.

That "Right = clockwise" definition definitely seems arbritary to me.

However, she definitely is spinning on her left foot, her right food extended, and spinning to her right. If someone isn't seeing that... I am mightily perplexed.

Atropine Mama

I can switch it at will. Depends on which leg you see as the pivot point. Stare at the hip.

If you have to turn a screw, and the directions say turn it clockwise, which direction do you turn your wrist?

Atropine Mama

Yup, when she turns clockwise, the pivot point becomes her right leg. Counter, the left leg. The leg "touching" the ground changes with the direction she's turning.

When you turn in a screw, you turn it in for the top. Women are not screws.

Even then I can't do it...

And what's odd is that apparently this means I'm extremely right brained, when I think I mostly left brained...

Ancalagon

ok

I now have a massive headache.

However, IF I hide the body of the woman with a piece of paper And I only look a the shadow from the corner of my eyes AND I don't focus, I can see the direction reversing. HOWEVER as soon as I look more closely my brain goes "nuh uh, look at the anatomy you dweeb" and the direction reverts to "her left leg is the pivot".

I've seen vague images where the direction of the rotation is indeed "arbitrary". But to me it makes *no* sense to have her rotate in the other direction.

edit:

I see it... yAAAAAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGG!!!!!

thank you for breaking my brain.

Nope. I tried, even with the tips here. Can't do it. She's going clockwise. The elements of anatomy don't allow for anything else when I stare at it; hips, toes, ribs, shoulders... I track the body and it moves clockwise. From the corner of my eye, if I look away and look back, if I track via hip or heel, cover the shadow of the feet or not.

That's what I told myself, until I saw it go in reverse!

I'm trying to do it again, but my head is just pounding, and I can't do it...

I managed to get her back to counter clockwise.

If I cover the body (and just look at the shadow/heel) she never turns around. The toes are always pointed away and just move back and forth...

I can't make it flip on demand but it appears to randomly flip when ever I look at it. Not sure I buy the left/right brain stuff about it.

I see that everytime I study somebody's anatomy. And break them down as geometric shapes. And mentally dissect them in seeking a clearer idea of how to portray body language, posture, etc. Maybe that's why people don't like it when I stare at them. That, or the twitching eye, I guess.

I'm with you on that. If I focus on just the shadow of the pivot heel, intermittently it appears to switch direction. But as soon as I see the rest of the body - it's clockwise to me. I have a giant right brain I guess.

Once she started going in the wrong direction and I couldn't make her go back for a while. It felt like I had broken my brain.

The first time you saw the Batman logo, did you see:
A. A black bat on a gold field?
B. An open mouth with a few worn out, yellow teeth?

Bat on yellow. Your mouth doesn't really look like that with missing teeth.

I finally see it the other way. If a catch her out of the corner of my eye, she's spinning counter clockwise and will remain that way if I look directly at her. After about 15 seconds or so, she resumes clockwise motion. Freaky.
