what I like is the rich history behind some of the scrap he's using... it's not just any piece of junk!

That too. Perhaps it aids with that stronger sense of authenticity. Really, the little skeleton of a story he's put together would make a fantastic movie in the right hands -- and he's already built most of the props for it. :)
