IQ isn't the most useful tool around but it does serve some use.
A person of average intelligence is an IQ of 100.
A person of IQ 70 is right at the brink of retardation.
Some observations:
A person of average intellect has problems interacting with somebody of borderline intellect. The average person will often have trouble treating them as an equal and frustration will often arise.
In general people of average intellect don't want to associate with somebody that is borderline retardation because of the intelligence gap.
Some thoughts:
A person of very superior is an IQ or 130 or so.
I think, in general, people of very superior have the same problems dealing with somebody of average intelligence that somebody of average intelligence has dealing with somebody of borderline intelligence. Sure they can do it, but damn is it painful.

I had much higher hopes for this topic than you provided.:(
However I'm pretty damn sure you are right in it.

This cale slides as you go down I have noticed. When I worked in the Mr population I noticed a definite cliquishness amongst IQ goups even when they were low IQs.

It doesn't surprise me. It seems to me that for most people it is very difficult to connect with people that have a good deal of difference in intellectual capacity.

I hadn't given it much thought but boy does it explain my annoyance level at work. The one and only time I ever took an IQ test was about 3 years ago and I was above average. I would not be surprised if most of my coworkers were in the 80-90 range. I many cases I have an easier time talking the doctors and patients (linguists aka people who tested very high on the ASVAT) than the rest of the assistants.

The assumption does not compute for me. The only time my IQ was ever measured, when I was in elementary school, it came to around 130 or so. I interact daily with people who have intelligence ranging from average to most definitely mentally disabled. I don't have any major troubles understanding or sympathizing with them, or getting my ideas across or understanding theirs.
Thinking that someone of low to middling intelligence has nothing significant to say or some understanding of how things work is snobbish, and ultimately, ignorant on the part of the person with more refined abilities. That person will end up missing out on occasional sparks of wit or essential information. Even, when you least expect it, unschooled genius.
That's not to say that it isn't often hard or frustrating to engage such folks in conversation. It is. But getting them to understand something I want to say can be fruitful for my own thought processes.

Do you game with any of them? Hang out with any of them? Go the movies? Discuss the latest book you read? etc?
Also at no point did I say they didn't have anything significant to say or lack understanding. You are reading way too much. What I said is it is difficult to associate.

Varaj: Do you believe that IQ tests provide a realistic measure of intelligence? And if so, how would you categorize it: accurate, rough ballpark, etc.
Regarding the ability to deal with people of lower IQs... I think that's primarily a function of empathy. Or perhaps even the "emotional IQ" concept that was put forth years ago. The idea that there are different types of intelligence, and that possession of one does not necessarily indicate possession of another. Yet those with great empathy and intellect have a much different experience in communicating and forming bonds with those of reduced intellect -- such as Harry illustrates.
You continue to drag up interesting subjects, and save for your rabid and unreasoning hatred of Superman -- who is clearly a superior literary construct -- I'd be impressed. :D

I would say it is an accurate reflection of one type of intelligence. I'm a believer that there are multiple types of intelligence.

I don't disagree, but it has been my observation that those boundaries are often not crossed.

I believe that too. I'm just not sure how much stock I put in IQ tests, even for that specific type. Culturally prejudicial leaps to mind. Plus out of the three I've taken, I've done exceptionally well -- and while I don't consider myself a dullard, I've never considered myself exceptionally bright. I have trouble taking them seriously.

True enough. I think there are a number of people who are 'bright' in one way or another out there, but folks who are true geniuses -- realizing that I'm stretching definitions here -- who excel at multiple types of intelligence and easily bridge such gaps, are incredibly rare.

The theory holds true for me. I prefer the company of children too small to wipe their own butts, let alone read, write, add or subtract. Explains why I get so frustrated with the big words my friends use, too. :D

Overall a fair trade I'd think... hell its not like you'll miss those IQ points once they are gone anyway.

Yep they were staged by Lucifer a few years before he released the Macarena to sway folks to the darkside.

It's not that you can't relate to people of a higher or lower intelligence it's just that you have to try a lot harder to do so. If I'm busy or in a bad mood I tend to say things that I have to go then explain. This isn't an issue if I actually think about my instructions instead of rattling off what I need.
For instance I sometimes have to have patients come in and sign forms. I left a post it in the record on the form that said "Please have pt sign #3 and return chart. Thanks, Shauna" I everyone who would been in the front if I wasn't around what I needed. When the patient came in two people in my office looked at the note and told she had to wait for me because they didn't know what I wanted. Now I put a very similar note in the records but I draw lines to the areas I need signed.

haha
I needed to draw pictures to tell them what I wanted rather than just putting it in words. My notes, unlike my posts, actually have the words I mean to say. :)
