The last half had many of the funniest episodes. The last couple years (of the 9-year run) had more "off" episodes, but there were always nuggets of comedy gold that outshone anything ever produced in Nothingland.

Um, no they're not. They're unlikeable yet strangely likeable at the same time. That's their beauty. Not everyone "gets" Seinfeld, but to say the show was not funny is to be missing your soul.
The whole point of Seinfeld was that there was to never be "a lesson," which made it unlike any other show.
Just take the four characters, put them in an everyday situation and watch them use language to produce pure comedic genius.

It is not funny in the same way that Friends is not funny. The characters are subhuman intellect stupid.
Yes because some guy making his room smoker friendly and then getting to be on a billboard is very funny.

Those were funny episodes. Very funny. Deliciously silly and funny. If that's what you use to represent "stupid," okay. Then every character ever on Monty Python was pretty damn stupid. Same with Fawlty Towers, etc, etc.

Movies that are funny.
Ghostbusters, Emperors New Groove, Caddyshack, Shaun of the Dead
TV shows
Can't think of any but I watch very little TV and generally can't stomach sit coms. MASH had lots of funny moments but I wouldn't really call it a funny show.

A Bill Murray fan? See I think Bill Murray is a comedy genius in a quirky kind of way. He tends to play "stupid" characters though.
Shaun of the Dead is hilarious mostly for the interplay between Shaun and Ed. But both are "stupid men."

Good comedy is based on surprise. Too many comedians end up basing comdey on shock value (which is similar, but eventually predictable). Jerry Seinfeld based his "comedy" on normal stupid shit that is neither surprising nor shocking.

Your definition of comedic talent seems to include juvenile dick and fart jokes, along with the venerated "your mom" catagory of humor.
I assure you that while you do laugh uproriously at such jokes, the other people in the room aren't laughing with you - they're laughing at you.

schism, you wouldn't know funny if it had a cheat code.
Juvenile dick and fart jokes have never been funny but "mom" jokes, delivered with the right timing and pizzaz are beautiful.

No not at all and I'm not sure where I've given that impression. Like many things I argue about on the internet and shoot the shit about, it usually centres around hyperbole used by others to comment on things I see value in. If that makes it personal well that's your perception.
Seinfeld through it's entire run I found to be hilarious at most times. Millions upon millions of others did too. Indeed it's on most top ten lists as one of the greatest comedies in history. You will find probably more commentary on Seinfeld on the internet than any other show. It was a show that was new and entirely unconventional for the time and has had a huge effect on pop culture. That is fact. To deny it and go on about it having no value or not being funny is patently ridiculous. Not much more than hyperbole. It's like I said in the other thread.

See this is almost my complaint about the Curb Your Enthusiasm show, which is really the same type of humour. It doesn't work as well as with the cast of Seinfeld. They were all perfect for eachother. It does work better with a show like the Office. That uncomfortable brand of humour.
The moronic antics of George.
The even-steven nature of Jerry's life.
The ups and downs of Elaine.
The other world of Kramer. All blending and feeding into eachother.
The finale, though not as well-executed as it should have been took them all to account for their selfish, absurdist, antics. Having dozens of the crazy, strange characters they encountered over the years testify at their trial was fitting.
In the end, there was no message, no melodrama and no learning. There was, however, a freaking treasure trove of comedy gold.
The summer of George.
The bubble boy.
The JFK assassination bit.
The fusilli Jerry
The dueling barbers
The top of the muffin
The Steinbrenner antics
The peeing in the parking garage
The Chinese baldness cure
The mistaken serial killer identity of Kramer
The karate episode
The Rusty episode
The toxic envelopes
The smelly car
The model episode
The puffy shirt
The calzone and the pennies.
Beautiful, beautiful comedy.

Well, now you've gone and shown that what you think isn't worth a damn.
I tried watching it, I tried to like it. Other people said it was good. All I found was that it alternated between boring and annoying with heavy traces of dumb. As atticus mentioned, much of the humor is sophomoric (for Greyone's sake that is defined as "huh-huh. I'm smarter than that guy. That's funny!") and the rest of it is mean spirited, but not in a clever, dark humor kind of way.
And don't even try to claim that it is absurdist humor. Monty Python is absurdist humor. There was nothing truly absurd about Seinfeld, just dumb.

Appart from accurately defining the humor as sophomoric, I don't see how what I wrote is anything other than my opinion. The show is not my cup of tea and I explained why.
If I were to be a cool kid dictating anything about TV, I'd say don't watch. TV is for those with no lives.

I take no issue with you not finding it funny. As Varaj described in another thread, it's perception and opinion. I take issue with the hatahs who talk "knowingly" about it when they never really watched it or know much about it.
The humour was also rarely sophomoric. You don't know what you're talking about. You claimed it wasn't absurdist comedy. There you are completely, 100% wrong:

You've never watched the show if you claim it was not absurdist. Some of the situations and antics were the very definition of absurd.
By comparisson to say Monty Python, the show wasn't absurdist at all.
Seinfeld: eg. Fiancee dying by licking low grade glue on envelopes.
**Survey says** : silly, mean spirited, but not exactly absurd
Monty Python: eg. Aggressive keep left signs.
**Survey says** completely ridiculous, impossible in the real world, absolutely absurd.

It was about as absurd as the Newheart show, except with less likeable characters.
As for sophomoric, maybe I just saw it that way because all I could think was "these characters are incredibly dumb in their decisions and actions that I was left to assume that that's where the comedy was intended to be derived from.

Ah, I see what you're doing. You're taking a specific element (which arguably is absurd farce despite what you think) of one Seinfeld episode and trying to prove the show has no absurdity to it. I gave you several YouTube examples above which ARE absurd situations. The Library cop coming to find a book years after it's lost. The JFK reenactment. The soup nazi. All are absurd situations.
Survey says: You don't what what you're talking about.
I have no problem with anyone saying they don't find the show funny or it's not their type of humour. But don't talk about it if you know next to nothing about it.

So you also feel that Monty Python, or Fawlty Towers or the Office, or __________ (almost any show) is sophomoric according to your definition? Huge branches of comedy come from people doing dumb things.
You're some kind of humour snob aren't you? Can I get a humour reference from you just so I know what you appreciate in a comedy?

Sophomoric is not simply humor at the idiocy of others, but humor that falsely causes the viewer to feel superior over the characters because the characters should know better and yet act dumbly anyway. Humor that makes you scream "don't do it! AHH HE'S DOIN IT!!" because you know what the results will be. This is not prevalent in Monty Python becuase the humor just makes you go "WTF? I didn't see that coming." This is the divide between sophomoric and absurd.
And no, I'm not a comedy snob.

Okay, fair enough. I'll admit that I haven't seen many episodes, and what I've seen has annoyed me too much before I could get any sort of WTF response. I think we may just have differing views on what absurdist is.
I just don't find a jerk running a soup shop too WTF for me. However, street signs that suddenly get up and start roughing up citizens walking by them is terribly absurd. I see the muppets, monty python, and Invader Zim to be highly absurdist because they entertain the idea of events that are beyond feasible real world situations. Seinfeld seems, more often, to take real world situations and turn them into characature. It's like the difference between Algolei and Eh2Zed. *shrug*

Seinfeld was one of the funniest shows on television.
Curb Your Enthusiasm (written and starred in by the Seinfeld writer/co-creator) tries to be as funny, but it doesn't work quite as well due to the characters not meshing quite as well.
Seinfeld is the only show I can think of that makes me laugh as hard as the Simpsons does. Family Guy comes close. The Office is pretty up there (though I've only seen a few episodes). Scrubs is decently funny. Arrested Development was up there too. Futurama has its moments.

All they've argued so far is 'I thought Seinfeld was dumb so it must have no merit whatsoever'. I can understand why someone might not like it. The characters are unlikeable, the situations are outlandish, and the whole thing is based on Jerry Seinfeld's comedy. If you don't like his comedy then the show probably won't gel for you. What I can't understand is the fucking jihad they launch everytime someone brings the show up. "Seinfeld is the devil!" "You like Seinfeld!? You must be dumb."

Isn't this the proper thread for Seinfeld hate? Not that I've seen much hate around this thread. It's hard to hate something you simply don't like and avoid. It's not like bad rap, which gets foisted on you whenever you sit in your car at a red light. Unless, and I may be missing this, there are militant Seinfeld fans out there forcing people to watch the show against their wishes. Lord knows what happens on the coasts. I avoid them.
For that matter, that may be why I avoided Seinfeld when it was first on. It was indicative of a snobby, sarcastic humor that must only go over well with a coastal audience. Just guessing.
But hey, since Acinonyx and GreyOne seem to think everyone is crapping up this "Seinfeld hate" thread, maybe they should start a "Seinfeld Love" thread where they can talk about the show to their hearts content.

I never managed to sit though an entire episode of Seinfeld, and people tried to make me do it numerous times. Main problem, Jerry Seinfeld has NEVER in the history of his career made me laugh or even chuckle. The characters on teh show were annoying, neurotic, narcissistic and unlikable to the point that they had to be friends because no one else could stand them. Hell come to think of it I don't even think they like each other.
I have never and will never understand the popularity of that stupid show and I really couldn't care less that it ran for 9 years. It's just like so many other things I don't get, like American Idol or any other reality show. Hah, apparently you make a bad date.
From the top 10 things not to do on a date:
4. Having too much attitude.
Laurie, a single woman in New York, was asked on a first date what TV shows she watches. When her date learned that she didn’t like the show Seinfeld, he didn’t believe her. Then he wouldn’t let it go for the entire meal. “He just couldn’t fathom my not liking that show,” Laurie explained. “It was as if I’d just said, ‘Yes, I live my life without consuming any liquids.’” Guys, if you want a second dinner, don’t spend the first one trying to convince your date that she’s not normal.

Seinfeld 4.0:
Seinfeld is ruining television! Why are we forced to watch it! Don't they care about the genre? Just love the way they're screwing over longtime TV fans - doesn't loyalty count for anything? They're only doing this show to make money. Sure, I could watch something else, but if everybody else loves Seinfeld, I'll be watching TV by myself and that sucks. Seinfeld is ruining my life.

On the original topic, the show annoyed me as I would be at least somewhat disturbed were Any of the main chars to ever procreate. As long as they were all fixed I can be ok with the show having been made and can even be amused from time to time.

I was entertained re-reading this thread with all of Grey One's posts done with the voice of Roger from American Dad.

Ran out of fap material, GO?
A while back, I stumbled across an article (about the dunning-kreuger effect, here (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolved-primate/201006/when-ignorance-begets-confidence-the-classic-dunning-kruger-effect)) which explained the german word Fremdschamen. It's pretty much why I can't watch Seinfeld or other similar things, and don't find them amusing at all.
Fremdschämen describes embarrassment which is experienced in response to someone else's actions, but it is markedly different from simply being embarrassed for someone else. In particular it is different from being embarrassed because of how another person's actions reflect on us or because of how another person's actions make us look in the eyes of others.
Instead, Fremdscham (the noun) describes the almost-horror you feel when you notice that somebody is oblivious to how embarrassing they truly are. Fremdscham occurs when someone who should feel embarrassed for themselves simply is not, and you start feeling embarrassment in their place.
