...Nah. But for the first time in thirty years, it yesterday hit parity with the American dollar. Just sayin'.

Sep 13, 2001 I travelled to North Carolina for a week's vacation. The exchange rate at the time was roughtly $1 CAD = $0.64 USD.

Thank you George Bush. Your policies are wonderful.

I have to say I'm very happy with the current exchange rate with our Northern Brothers and Sisters.

Given that you invested up here? I can see why. :)

For Canadians who have some extra money socked away, this is a good time to buy up American dollars. We can expect that this buoyance is temporary, and that we'll drop back down below parity after awhile. Whether as an investment, or simply to have money socked away for Disneyland, this is a fine opportunity.

Big business is currently screaming for the government to do something to deflate our dollar a bit. We'll probably see an interest rate drop fairly shortly.

The plus side? The longer the conservatives take to act on this, the more they're pissing off the exporting industries. They really should have taken action on this months ago.

Yep my trust unit payments have increased by 12% since I started investing in your fine country.

I'm jealous. I've been watching the market for years, and watching stock I was eyeing pay off in spades. :( The nature of my job is feast or famine, though, so disposable income is a sparse and unpredictable thing. Instead of investing, we put money in our daughter's education fund.

If you invest the money you are effectively investing in her college fund.

For my son I have a great plan... he can get scholarships and take out loans. Then once he has proven he can pay bills and get his shit together then I'll have a sudden windfall that hlps him out.

I want to make sure my kid learns as many of lifes hard lessons as I can and no safty net is the best way to learn.

By the way Advantage Energy Trust and Harvest Energy Trust are my Canadian Flagships.

Nice. Energy's a great investment. There was a little firm here a few years back that figured out how to boost the efficiency of solar cells into the 30th percentile, iirc.

Energy tech has a great future. It's finally come to the point where people are realizing it's a necessity, not sci-fi.

I remember watching Nortel's stock bomb a few years back, dropping down well below a dollar. I just boggled at that. I couldn't believe lemmings were selling off like that. Their hard assets alone were worth much more than that! If they liquidated and solid it all off, you'd still make a killing with their stock that low. Of course it had jumped back up to over $20 a few months later. I was beating my head off the wall for missing that one.

Nortel jumped from around $2 to its current value by doing a reverse stock split last year... for every 10 shares you had you now had 1 share worth 10x as much.

I wasn't tracking the market at all last year. Too rough a year for extraneous thought. I presume they dipped again, since we're talking about $2 shares. :grey: Man, that company's a roller coaster.

Hell, though... even at $2, that's still doubling (almost tripling) your money if you bought them when they were rock bottom. Any idea how they're faring these days? Last I heard two years ago, their value was spiked by news of a massive telephone system extension in China that they were contracted for.

They are trading at $16.45 at the moment.

Any idea of the overall health of the company? I haven't heard a peep.

ATT and Verizon are the only telecoms I invest in... the industry overall is fairly unpredictable and flaky.

Look at it this way, with the dollor down it pays to buy American since the products from overseas are more expensive now. That'll give a boost to the economy which will make the dollar go up.

As to the original question, is it ok to still make fun of Canadians ?

Is it still okay to make fun of southerners?

I think the eternal answer is "Yes", followed by "Why are you wasting time with the question when you could be mocking?"
