As I was falling asleep the other night I thought, "does the Fibonacci spiral fit boobs?" The nipple-areola-boob ratios seemed right, so I made this. I think I'm on to something, I'm just not sure what. :scratchchin:

Highly likely. That looks like a golden rectangle, one suited to the golden mean/the number hovers around the ratios of the Fibonacci series. Breasts are not spherical (at least not natural ones), so this pleasing shape and its relationship to classical anthropometrics are probably no accident. http://www.vashti.net/mceinc/golden.htm

If memory serves, the golden ratio was well regarded in antiquity and my understanding is that these ratios not only originated from harmonious musical relations, but also described the relative proportions of the body parts in a male nude of ideal size and form, like Polykleitos's canon.

But, doesn't the boobie fit the design only when viewed from a particular angle? And isn't it, therefore, the angle which is significant, moreso than the boobie? Furthermore, I've just used the words "therefore," "moreso," and "furthermore" in this post, which means I don't really know what I'm talking about and should probably be dismissed until I can figure out what I really wanted to say.

Or maybe enough of my intended meaning gleams through the mist of babbledom. :warped:

P.S. Boobies!

They are not symmetrical across all axes if that's what you mean. But who cares?

I saw this documentary ages ago where they were using the golden ratio to compare faces of people that were considered attractive. They had built kind of like a wire frame mask (digitally, not actual wire) where ratio of eye to cheek to distance between eyes to etc etc all were put in the wire frame.

It was surprising that "beautiful people" fit most of the wire frame, but all usually had one feature that did not fit - eyebrows, big lips, etc. The mock up of the "perfect face" that fit perfectly was attractive, but not super attractive.

Interesting.

Now I'm getting an idea for an art project... for somebody else who actually does art...

An abstract nude made entirely out of Fibonacci spirals.

I remember something like that in the BBC's "The Human Face" with John Cleese. Pretty interesting little documentary, actually.

That looks like a golden rectangle...

That's actually what I meant to say. The golden ratio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio) is 1.6180339, which seems about right for the nipple to areola but maybe not the areola to breast.

I only see one solution. Everyone here must measure their nipples, areolae and breasts. For science. :teacher:

That's quite finicky to do on your own. Come here, and I'll measure it for you.

These things are temperature sensitive which affects measurement. You need to specify ambient temperature for a consistent data set.

I think in the interests of science it behooves us all to measure our nipples in a variety of temperatures. But again, as Cat said... these things are difficult to do alone. You measure mine and I'll measure yours, eh Cat? :naughty:
