"A few months ago, Trent Reznor (frontman of the band Nine Inch Nails), was in Australia doing an interview when he commented on the outrageous prices of CDs there. Apparently now his label, Universal Media Group is angry at him for having said that. During a concert last night, he told fans, '...Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means — STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these mother****ers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that's not right.'"

Bold move, but innapropriate. Better way to fight the system is to pull an Ozzy and do a free tour.

There shouldn't even be CDs. They are a totally antiquated technology.
For that matter, DVD-Music should be at the end of it's life (instead of having been stillborn) due to Blu-Ray.
But Hollywood insists on antiquated technology ... at modern prices.

I have always liked Trent but this can't make him any fans in the record industry.

I thought mid-range artists didn't really get any money from CDs, but got huge amounts of the take from tour merchandise.

Did you see that tour? I did, it sucked big black donkey balls. I don't know if it was because Ozzy couldn't get any top shelf musicians do go on the tour or what but it blew! I wasn't worth the hassle of getting the free tickets.
Trent may not be making friends with the record labels but I'm reasonable sure there are a lot of musicians behind him. They make crap off the cd's and many think the sell price is grossly overinflated. Trent has enough pull in the business that he can shit on the label exes desk and still get paid so they can whine about him speaking out all they want with little effect on his life or livelihood.

I don't think that was his intent.

I can't imagine this making one difference one way or the other.

Truth. I would love it if it did, and I have more respect for Trent, but this amounts to a hill of beans at best.

I agree, he has good intentions but its not like he is Bono, Billy Joel, Kanye West, etc. Most people don't know him and he does not move the meter. Eddie Vetter railed against ticketmaster for years and not only did it not do anything, I would venture to say they are even more crooked today.

Tours are where musicians should make ALL their money. The music recordings that are put out should cost (next to) nothing.
But then, that's just my opinion. :)
